Pinspiration: Built-in desk (for a small space)

November 15, 2012 - Author: admin
after-living-room

I just might have the smallest one-bedroom attic apartment in Boston. With all the crafting that I have been up to lately, starting my etsy shop, this has become a problem. Since moving isn’t an option, it became imperative recently that I come up with a solution that makes the most of our small space.

We tend to move our furniture around quite often to keep things fresh, and this time around the way we spaced things sparked a brand new idea – letting me incorporate a few inspiration ideas that I’ve pinned over the last year…

I love the “L” shape desks, especially when they look built in.  I also love the white, airy, clean look with lots of fun prints and picture frames on the wall.  I wasn’t quite sure if these looks were going to fly in my little place though.  To give you some perspective, here is the before pictures from before we ever moved into our apartment:

See!  Tiny!  That is pretty much all there is to it.  We measured out the desk to be just small enough for that nook – only 18″ deep (which is small for a desk) but it really worked out!  And here is the finished product!

Thankfully, I was able to take full advantage of the nice people at Home Depot who pre-cut everything to my measurements!  That way, all we had to do when we got home was to screw it all together and assemble it.  Also, my landlord is very nice and allowed us to use his power tools to tweak it a little. I even got Brigham to use a power drill for the first time!  All told, the project came in at just about $100 (not including the already owned ikea shelf at the base) and I still have TONS of the table-top material to use for shelves or some other future project space!

I’m so happy with the results.  I just love my new desk.

Pinspiration: 5 Outfits / 1 Skirt

September 21, 2012 - Author: admin
5-outfits-1-skirt

Image Sources Here

Hello lovely blog friends!  Tonight I wanted to try out all the different pinspiration outfits all at once with my new skirt!  I made it a few weeks ago and have totally fallen in love with it.  In a way, it is the best of all worlds: feels like sweats, looks like glamour (according to my husband) and is just the right kind of cozy for fall weather. The best part is, you can basically wear it with anything (as demonstrated above).

I actually bought this fabric months ago, when I visited Bayba, but I was just too lazy to sew the 2 seams together.  I mean, how lazy can you get.  Two. Seams.  You don’t even have to sew in elastic around the waist because the fabric already has enough stretch.  But I digress.  Thankfully, I did get around to it finally, and now that I have it, I just love to wear it.  It is quickly becoming my favorite item.

A lot of my friends have asked me about how to shop for fabric and where to buy it.  If you are inexperienced with fabric shopping, it can be quite tedious to find what you are looking for without help.  So, because I think everyone should have this type of love for their own skirt, I’m putting a link up to the right type of fabric.  Buy 2 yards (1.5 works, but just get extra to be on the safe side) from anything on this link.  Pick something adventurous!  If you buy $35 worth you get free shipping, and always, free no hassle returns.  [they don't plug me for saying that] So you may as well stock up on other fabric you like also!

Lastly, here is the tutorial! (once again)

I hope you give it a try!

Pinspiration: Summer wardrobe style

September 2, 2012 - Author: admin

Well, it’s officially the last day of summer today, so I thought I had better post a few of my summer outfits before it is too late!  And by a few, I mean, the only pics I took.  So long, summer.  Goodbye neon everything trend, sandals, skirts, and sleeping with no blankets (read: everything I love).  Hello…uh, burgundy, random mismatched patterns and polka dots, and one season closer to winter?

I have mixed feelings about welcoming Fall.  On the plus side, I just bought some fantastic REAL leather boots (that I have been coveting for about 2 years now) for just $80 bucks (normally $200)!  It’s my early birthday present to myself – and it’s currently way too hot to even think about putting them on, even though I do think about it, often.  So, for that reason, I’m looking forward to fall weather.  I’m also excited about apple picking and our (now annual) trip to New Hampshire for the weekend, and the beautiful leaves changing colors.  On the down side, fall means winter is just around the corner, and winter stresses me out; ergo, fall stresses me out.

But I digress.  This is a post about fashion.  I am so proud of myself for making this much of an effort to plan outfits, and thank goodness for pinterest.  Just the other day I went shopping with my friends and I felt like my old self again – the one who had roommates that asked me for style consultations.  It just felt so fantastic to pretend to be Stacy London (What Not to Wear).  I really enjoyed each of these looks and felt so great to walk around knowing I put something together on purpose (as opposed to my normal whatever-takes-5-minutes-grab-n-go).  So I have a few tips I’d like to share that made these looks possible.

If you are in love with it, and it’s a little pricey, ok, just buy it.  Shirt #1 (far left) was a quick grab from a non-sale rack from the Gap Outlet…which is almost a never for me.  If you know me at all, I almost exclusively shop sales/clearance ONLY.  But somehow this shirt made it to the dressing room, and as soon as I put it on, Brigham said “Hey, that’s an Emily shirt.  Wow you look hot!”  So, okay, maybe it helps if your husband is in love with it too, but I did fall in love myself.  There comes a time in every woman’s life when even though you realize you could have 5 mediocre shirts, you’d rather just have that special one you love.  $35 later, 6 months down the line, still love it.

Keep it in your closet.  The entire outfit #2 is pretty much “on trend” at the moment, yes?  But guess what! Nothing whatsoever in this outfit is newer than 4 years old.  That stinking polka dot skirt has been sitting in my closet, unworn, for no less than 4 years.  The white sandals are from Bayba’s wedding 7 years ago.  The shirt is a classic Banana Republic that I bought about 6 years ago (another one I fell in love with and still don’t regret).  I never wore that skirt because it just wasn’t popular to wear polka dots, so I felt awkward, took it off, and hung it back up.  Now I am so glad that I hung onto it!  All of it!  Fashion cycles so randomly now through fads, that things are bound to come back around RIGHT after you finally decide to get rid of it.  So, just keep it around…because you never know!

Don’t overlook Forever 21.  Honestly, there was a good solid, oh I don’t know, 10 years that I completely wrote off Forever 21 as a piece-of-crap-immodest-random-not-worth-my-time clothes store.  Sometimes, I’d even try to go in there, and I’d just get massively confused and overwhelmed – to be fair, that was when wearing rags with spandex were the new hot trend.  But I think lately (as in the past 2 years) they have made a real push to carry at least a corner’s worth of classy-classic very cute wardrobe staples.  And the sales!  I went in on a random day a few months ago, and snatched up this #3 Striped Cardigan for $3 bucks.  Jackpot!  Sometimes it is a waste of time, sometimes you gotta dig, but it’s worth a good look.

What do you think?  How did I do with my inspiration looks?  Would you wear any of this?

Pinspiration: Summer Date Night

July 9, 2012 - Author: everythingforthelove
date-look

1 / 2 / 3 / 4

The hubs requested that I “dress up” for this date, which meant, I had to wear heels.  Even though I own about 20 pairs of heels, for some reason I have a hard time sporting them since we moved to Boston.  Maybe it is because in Boston everything requires s0. much. walking.

Anyway, I opted for the wedge because I think they are easier to walk in (agree?).  You really can’t go wrong with black skinny jeans, and that banana republic sheer top has been dying to get out of my closet for about a year!  All said, I think it came together nicely.  At least he thought so!

We had a great night out, and for the record I totally recommend the new Spiderman!  I couldn’t get enough of Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield.  I kind of want to be her.

Pinspiration: 100% (recycled & free) Pouf

May 26, 2012 - Author: everythingforthelove

I made a pouf tonight!

I guess you can be pretty darn productive when you don’t have a playful husband in town to distract you from getting things done.  Anyway, I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’ve had my eye on these poufs on pinterest for a little while now…

…particularly because I have had 2 very unfortunate, firm, large 24″ pillows that always seemed to be in JUST the right spot to trip over on a regular basis.  They are too firm to sleep with, so they always end up on the floor somewhere.  In a tiny 1 bedroom apartment, we don’t need any additional clutter.

So, needless to say, I was just as hip on nixing those pillows as I was on making a pouf.  And as they were already situated as squares, I decided to take the simple route and make the square pouf. I’m all about efficiency.  Also, the pattern appeared to be the easiest!  How can you go wrong with a bunch of squares and rectangles?

Here is the tutorial I used (only I didn’t use rugs, because I didn’t want to end up with a bunch of broken needles in my sewing machine)

Best part is it was 100% FREE!!

How did I do that?

1. Recycled Fabric

2. Recycled batting/filler foam

3. Recycled zipper

4. I made it myself!

I didn’t spend a single penny on this project.  I used fabric that had a previous life on the dining tables at my backyard wedding:

See that adorable fabric under the soda cans (get it?  Jones & Welch) and photo montage wall?  Indulge me and look at my wedding photos, will you…

As you can see, my fabric had an excellent first life!

Moving onto the batting.  Once I removed the pillows from those white pillow cases I inserted them as-is directly into the pouf.  At that point, I realized that I had two issues (a) I’d need a zipper and (b) I’d need some extra filler to fill out the gaps between the pillows in there.  So, I solved problem (a) by ripping out the zipper in the one of the original white pillow cases from Ikea.  It was exactly the right length!  Problem (b) aka the filler issue took a little more thought, but I got to a solid solution.  Enter “A-ha” moment!

The extra layer of foam on my bed has seen better days (orig $15 from Target) so I ripped it off and started cutting it into 24×24 inch squares.  Once I painstakingly inched those foam pieces into their respective quadrants, I was pretty stoked with the result!  No lumps at all!

Not bad for zero dollars, huh?

Thanks for reading!

Baby Shower Extravaganza!

May 15, 2012 - Author: everythingforthelove

Hello Blog. How are you? It has been a while since I’ve posted anything. I’ve felt a bit guilty about it, even though Jones assures me that I shouldn’t. Besides the normal day-to-day busyness, I felt like last month I was busy preparing for the rest of the summer. Does that sound weird? I planned two back-to-back trips (2 weeks in Utah, 2 weeks in Florida – literally a day between the two trips). The hubs has a 6 week internship starting while the kids and I are in Florida (in a city 3 hours from our home) and when he comes back  it’s basically time to have baby #3.  I guess I felt like I had a lot of little things to take care of before I was gone from home for a month.

Like I said, I’ve felt a bit guilty not contributing to the blog as much as I would like to and knowing I’d be gone from home for a month, I really didn’t know when I would have material that I deemed “blog-worthy”.

Little did I know that my sister-in-law was going to host a baby shower for a friend while I was in Utah and how awesome it was going to turn out!  (And how much fun I would have help put this thing together)

My SIL Stephanie was the one hosting the shower. But it was my SIL Laura that kind of ran the show. She had tons of ideas and the determination to do it all. With perfection.

Maybe I should let the pictures speak for themselves?

*Note: if you’re looking at these pics and think to yourself, “Wait a minute? Haven’t I seen something like this on Pinterest?” You can probably, most definitely, say “Yes”. After all, this is the theme of this post.

Okay wait, before I begin. I should preface by saying that the original theme of the shower was “vintage circus”. It turns out finding things to make your baby shower feel like a “vintage circus” is hard to do.

Let’s start with the food table:

My in laws happen to have a popcorn maker. Circus-y, no? I even flexed the old Adobe illustrator muscles and designed the food signs. They took way too long for what they were, but I’m a bit rusty. Either way – I think they turned out cute. The frame – we found at DI (and for those of you that don’t know Mormon/Utah-speak, Deseret Industries or DI is a thrift store owned by the LDS church. Like a Salvation Army.) We spray painted the frame “Dover White”. The popcorn cups are made from scrapbook paper.

Darling elephant sugar cookies.  (I think Stephanie and my MIL did all the food – thank goodness too, because as you will see, Laura and I got a bit carried away with the decorations) Yes, that IS blue cotton candy in the vase back there. I had no idea you could just buy cotton candy, but I guess I never looked either. We got this stuff from Chuck E Cheese, of all places. And it was super good.

A little wider view of the table. Setting up a lovely food table is super helpful when your MIL already has really nice serving ware. Like that pretty water pitcher.

Random “serving” platter we found at DI. Really, I have no idea was it originally was. But it was brown, so we painted it, stuck some cute cupcakes on it, and a vase full of animal crackers on top AND wa-lah!

More foodie signs and painted DI frames…

The whole food table. Oh! And the flower-printed table runner? A $2.00 sheet, again from DI (cut and sewn). Don’t worry, we washed it. AND we sterilized everything else we got there too.

A close up of the pendant banner. I’ve seen these done a couple of ways. Jones herself made one. We chose the easy way out. Scrapbook paper, hole punch, and  twine.

One of the eating/sitting tables. I will post details below…

Everything on the table was either thrifted from DI or was already on hand. I wish I taken a close up of the little dish in the center of the picture (the one with the peanuts in it). We had two of them and they were so cute. And cost maybe a $1.00 each. The runner going down the center of the table is a strip of vinyl table cloth with a stitch down the middle, then pulled to make it ruffle.

The other table. In the background you can see our streamer curtain – blowing in the wind. *Note: streamer curtains are probably best used for indoor decoration. It was very windy the day of the shower and the whole thing got pretty tangled up.

Laura found this random letter “G” at DI. So happens that the mom-to-be’s last name starts with the letter G and the baby is a girl.  So there you go. We painted the G pink and then glued tissue paper to it. The large frame was actually a mirror we found at DI for $3.00. My brother in law sacrificed his hand a little bit getting the mirror part out for us (thanks Michael!).  No pain, no gain  -right?

Close up of the lovely little bench and streamer curtain, before the wind nearly destroyed it. This is where the mom-to-be opened her gifts.

And of course, the pom-poms. Pom-poms are easy, but kind of time consuming.

Most of the chairs we had to borrow from the church, but my MIL had a couple of her own and my SILs spray painted them as part of her mother’s day present. SO cute. We had to set them up. Just a heads up though, if you plan on doing this yourself be warned that you could easily use an entire can of spray paint for one chair (so this project can add up quickly).  And once it dries you will need to spray some sort of varnish on top or the paint leaves bit of a powdery residue when you touch it.

Another pinterest find. Paint the inside of a vase so the outside still stays glossy. Turned out ok… the top didn’t look great but with the flowers, no one was the wiser.

Ok, I am lame because I thought I took a picture of the entire set up, but I didn’t. The picture below will have to do…

You can see more of the yard, including the two eating tables. And a tiny peek of the beautiful mountains. (Oh how I miss those mountains)

In case you’re wondering, it took over a week to acquire/make everything and we were still scrambling to get it all done before the shower started and we had a lot of help. At the end of it all I’ve decided that Pinterest is both a blessing and a curse. And how did we ever live without it?
